KS4 Course Description
 
Subject Media
Syllabus BTEC First Certificate in Media
Course Outline   In this new course, you will learn a variety of skills whilst analysing different forms of media, including:    
    Media Production
Advertising
Researching the Media
Writing for the Media
   

Through various projects and assignments, you will show your understanding of different media and generate your own ideas and create your own media productions. This will be shown through written assignments and practical productions on individual and group tasks.

 
 
Typical Activities

Researching (Internet / Interviews / Questionnaires)
Analysing different forms of media
Using computer software to create own media productions (e.g. radio / magazine advertisements)
Evaluating own media productions
Assignments Assessment is through the different assignments that are set. This works as follows:
 

Student are introduced to different techniques and ideas
An assignment brief is then given to students
Students work through the process of generating ideas, drafting and then creating a final piece to present
Students evaluate their decision making and final production

Assessment Details The final grade awarded will be a combination of the Assignment grades, these are marked: Pass, Merit or Distinction – all being the equivalent of 2 GCSE grades ( A* - C). There are no examinations.
Homework Homework will be set at least once a week and may include elements of preparation, research and evaluating for projects. It must always be completed to a high standard to ensure students achieve their potential.

How parents can help Parents can monitor homework to ensure it is completed to a high standard and encourage research and thorough preparation for assignments and projects.

Reasons for choosing this subject As a new option, this is an opportunity to look closer into the world of: television, film, newspapers, magazines, and radio to appreciate their purpose, and the tricks and techniques they use to influence us all.

This subject mixes written and practical tasks making it appealing to all types of learners!

The skills learnt through this course will provide every student with the knowledge and understanding to move on to further media related courses at higher levels.

There will be opportunities to work with professional people from the media industry to further skills and understanding in different areas. If you have an interest in journalism, advertising, working on the radio or any other media production, what are you waiting for?

The Year 10 Media groups ventured to the Widnes CLC in order to solve a problem for the Manager there – advertising the CLC!

Many people are unaware that the CLC is for everybody in Widnes and has state-of-the art facilities and equipment to be used.

The Media groups used Apple Macs and broadcasting software to create radio advertisements to promote the CLC to Widnes people.
