Welcome To The History Department

 

 

History is an extremely popular and successful department at The Bankfield School. It is taught at Key Stage 3 and 4 as a foundation subject.

History is an extremely interesting and useful subject. As well as acquiring a wealth of information, you will also gain many key skills which you will be able to apply to many different situations.

History is a very important subject as it gives you a sense of who you are by learning about the lives of people who lived before you. It helps you to understand your place in today's society!

The department is staffed by two full time specialist teachers who are both fully committed to ensuring that all students reach their full potential. The department is very well resourced and both History classrooms are equipped with interactive white boards.

The department uses a range of teaching and learning approaches to ensure that learners are engaged, motivated and challenged.

The department is very well resourced. There are two specialist classrooms which are both equipped with interactive white boards.
The department uses a range of teaching and learning approaches to ensure that all learners are engaged, motivated and challenged.
We use a variety of resources including CD Roms, interactive games, film clips, documentaries as well as textbooks.


How is History taught at Key Stage 3?

 

Students in Key Stage 3 have a one hour lesson of History each week.


The History Curriculum – Key Stage 3

 

The History Curriculum covers a range of skills and topics at Key Stage 3.  These units are both enjoyable and challenging for the students to ensure that progress is made.


Year 7
In Year 7 students investigate a number of periods of History from the Roman Empire to the Middle Ages. They examine whether or not people loved or hated the Roman Empire and then look at the development of political power in the Middle Ages. They complete a project on medieval castles and will produce a podcast about the Black Death!


Year 8
In Year 8, students move onto the Tudor period and look at the reasons why Henry V111 established the Church of England. The theme of political power is further developed through the study of the English Civil War. Students then progress to examine the period of the Industrial revolution, the British Empire and the slave trade.


Year 9
In Year 9, students examine the main changes, developments and people of the 20th century. They focus in particular on the First World War, the rise of the Nazis and life in Nazi Germany. In addition, students learn about the main developments of the Second World War, the Cold War and finally, they complete an enquiry that focuses on Terrorism in the 20th and 21st Centuries


How is History taught at Key Stage 4?

 

History is a very popular subject at Key Stage 4. In the current Years 10 and 11 there are 3 teaching groups and all students have 3 one hour lessons each week.


The History Curriculum – Key Stage 4

 

The History Curriculum covers a range of skills and topics at Key Stage 4. These units are both enjoyable and challenging for all students to ensure that  good progress is made. Students follow the Edexcel ‘Modern World’ specification.

 

Year 10 – Topics include:

  • Germany 1919 – 45
  • The Cold War 1943 - 1991

Year 11

  • A Divided Union – USA 1945 – 70
  • The Impact of War on Britain 1919 – 50 (Controlled Assessment)
